La investigación científica sobre el origen de la industria metalúrgica atlántica que Moisés Rodríguez Bayona, doctor en Prehistoria y Arqueología y miembro del Grupo Midas III Milenio A.N.E. de la Universidad de Huelva (UHU), ha desarrollado durante dos años, ha dado sus frutos: un exhaustivo análisis, editado en soporte CD, que refuerza la línea de trabajo en la que el grupo está inmerso
desde hace años, constatando que en el tercer milenio antes de nuestra era las sociedades del suroeste tenían una tecnología muy sofisticada y desarrollada en lo que a producción metalúrgica se refiere.
El arduo trabajo comenzó en junio de 2012, cuando la Onubense y la Fundación Atlantic Copper firmaron un convenio de colaboración por el que la entidad sin ánimo de lucro financió con 30.000 euros la primera fase de este trabajo, titulado Investigación de la primera Metalurgia Atlántica en la Península Ibérica: El
SW y la provincia de Huelva como marcos de referencia (3.100-2.200 B.C.).
En el transcurso de la investigación, Atlantic Copper mostró su interés en publicar, además, un proyecto de difusión. Así, Mil años de historia escrita en cobre y oro, llamada a ser la primera entrega de una serie enfocada a la difusión pedagógica en centros escolares y bibliotecas públicas, también acaba de publicarse. La obra, en la que se inserta la investigación de Rodríguez Bayona, incorpora además otra serie de factores que explican la metalurgia del cobre y sus efectos a nivel social, tecnológico, político y económico. Respecto al primer trabajo, Rodríguez Bayonaha analizado 37 muestras de Cabezo Juré, en Alosno, y de Valencina de la Concepción, un macro yacimiento ubicado en el Aljarafe sevillano en el que se documentó un área de nueve hectáreas dedicada a la actividad metalúrgica, con una producción intensiva. Ambos son dos de los contextos más antiguos de producción metalúrgica de la Península Ibéric
a y de los más importantes de toda Europa.
En este sentido, la datación por carbono 14 más antigua y fiable de un contexto de producción metalúrgica en toda la Península Ibérica corresponde al primer yacimiento arqueológico -3.100 antes de nuestra era-. De este modo, hace más de 5.100 años queda constatado que ya se producían metales en hornos, con crisoles y toberas, por lo que la cronología real inicial debería retrotraerse.
«Como resultado, esta investigación ha supuesto un salto cualitativo y cuantitativo en los estudios arqueométricos de nuestra Prehistoria peninsular, ya que su interpretación, su dimensión histórica, no sólo cubre un importante vacío de conocimiento, sino que desmonta y deconstruye las teorías y modelos tradicionales de interpretación de la actividad metalúrgica», señala el historiador.
El análisis sobre los modos de fabricación de los productos de metal ha sido, sobre todo, un estudio realizado desde una perspectiva tecnológica, aunque lógicamente también se aporta la correspondiente contextualización social e histórica. «A nivel tecnológico esta sociedad es bastante más sofisticada de lo que en principio cualquier lector podría imaginarse. Hay muchos más elementos de los que se tratan en este trabajo con los que puedo construir esta respuesta, pero inicialmente se pensaba que era una metalurgia de carácter doméstico, muy poco especializada y con unas técnicas muy simples. En absoluto fue así», asegura Rodríguez Bayona.

Como valor añadido, la investigación evidencia que el suroeste de la Península Ibérica y la Faja Pirítica de la actual provincia de Huelva ocupan «el lugar que les corresponde», incluso en la esfera internacional de la investigación de un tema tan relevante como el de los inicios de la actividad metalúrgica, el de la metalurgia de un recurso tan fundamental como fue el cobre en la Prehistoria.
En cuanto a la elección del soporte CD para la publicación de su investigación, Rodríguez Bayona explica que este permite una mayor difusión y transferencia de conocimiento. Así, posibilita el uso de herramientas digitales que facilitan y enriquecen la consulta de un estudio de estas características y desde el grupo, y con el beneplácito de la Fundación Atlantic Copper, entendían que «debíamos adecuar el soporte de edición a los nuevos tiempos y tecnologías, sobre todo en trabajos como este, de ciencia pura y dura».

Parte de esta primera edición se distribuirá a los medios académicos, a todas las bibliotecas universitarias, a los centros de investigación y a expertos en la materia, ya que se trata de un trabajo científico y académico y, en principio, su distribución va a ser más específica.
Rodríguez Bayona está inmerso en la segunda fase del proyecto, toda vez que en mayo de 2014 se suscribió otro convenio específico de colaboración entre la UHU y la Fundación Atlantic Copper, que aporta 36.000 euros, para la continuación (hasta finales de 2016) de este estudio sobre la primera metalurgia atlántica en la Península Ibérica. En esta nueva fase, el experto trasladará su línea de investigación a otro ámbito espacial: analizará materiales del tercer milenio de una serie de yacimientos de gran relevancia y significación en la Prehistoria peninsular pero del centro y sureste andaluz, concretamente de Jaén y Córdoba. «Lo que queremos es continuar, seguir un eje, un recorrido. Ya tenemos controlado el suroeste porque mi tesis y el trabajo del grupo se centra en este ámbito, pero ahora queremos ver qué ocurre en el mismo momento en otros ámbitos espaciales», explica.
La difusión de la otra publicación, Mil años de historia escrita en cobre oro, se desarrollará, sin embargo, en el ámbito escolar, concretamente en institutos, aunque también tendrá su correspondiente vertiente académica. Sobre esta publicación, Nocete Calvo explica que está pensada para difundir la historia y lo que implicó el cobre en su proceso de producción: «Aborda en qué consistió esta primera industria de Europa, y qué efectos tuvo en la propia tecnología y en la sociedad de aquel momento. Pero está orientada a una difusión científica, no cuenta un cuento. Es difundir la ciencia, difundir esos contenidos y explica cómo, a través de la ciencia, se ha llegado a ese tipo de conclusiones».

El libro, una edición bilingüe (en castellano e inglés) propone un total de 13 temas que recorren la tecnología, aparte de situarla en el tiempo y el espacio, desde el abastecimiento de la materia prima a la metalurgia del oro, pasando por el procesado del mineral, la producción de cobre en hornos, la combustión mediante inyección de aire con fuelles y toberas, el refinado y moldeado del cobre (crisoles, tenazas y moldes), la manufactura de los productos, los productos del cobre y su incidencia en los sectores productivos, así como en el comercio.
Nocete precisa que cada capítulo tiene una estructura similar. Así, tras plantearse cada tema, se enuncia el valor de la ciencia y cómo han llegado los investigadores a esa conclusión. Un apartado específico indica qué análisis se han realizado, dónde y cómo, «para poder afirmar, por ejemplo, que estas toberas u hornos soportaron 1.200 grados». Y se incluye una bibliografía específica en la que se publican estos resultados en revistas internacionales de impacto. Eso permite que, aunque el libro esté orientado a un público no especializado, el lector pueda también acceder al valor de la ciencia y profundizar en esos aspectos.

Cada capítulo, además, tiene un apartado, titulado Hoy, en el que se aborda cómo se realizan esas actividades en la actualidad, un recurso «muy potente» que permite dimensionar esa complejidad que tuvo este proceso comparándolo con los métodos modernos. En este sentido, se comparan siempre con dos parámetros: «Jugamos con sociedades que hoy usan las mismas tecnologías que la gente de hace 5.000 años, antropología sobre todo de África, y utilizamos a las empresas y a las fábricas que usan la tecnología más moderna, como Atlantic Copper».
El libro concluye con los últimos trabajos de investigación del grupo, relativos al oro. Porque, junto a la metalurgia del cobre, «hubo una del oro, la más antigua de Europa». Se presentan así los objetos de oro de aquel momento, su tecnología, se explica cómo los científicos han llegado a esas conclusiones, qué análisis han realizado, y cómo en la actualidad se sigue fabricando el oro asociado al cobre con imágenes de Atlantic Copper, «cómo se produce oro dentro de la empresa y de la factoría y el papel que el oro sigue jugando, antes y hoy, como elemento de desarrollo y prestigio social».
Los textos se acompañan de más de cien imágenes tomadas ex profeso y una maquetación específica, un cuidado trabajo realizado por Fran Nocete Peramo.
